I snapped this with my phone right as the credits finished

Some quick thoughts after seeing Ghostbusters which are all SPOILERS so promise me you won’t even read this until you’ve seen the film first

  • I liked the movie, it was funny, but it was a pretty straightforward simple story, not too many twists and turns. I kind of wanted it to be so epic and great, but on the whole it was as good as any standard enjoyable comedy. Of Paul Feig’s works, I thought Bridesmaids and The Heat were funnier, but this was still up there with his better works.
  • It felt like mostly improv with the cameras rolling, which was kind of great.
  • There were one or two times where some improv-y bits felt a little flat, almost awkward silences in the theater at the end of a scene.
  • A couple of the best jokes were already in the trailer. I wish they used funny cut scenes for the trailer instead so the jokes were all fresh.
  • Early on they got a jab in at stupid internet commenters that hate an all-women Ghostbusters movie, which was solid gold.
  • Everyone was great in it, but Kate McKinnon was the absolute star of the show. She’s the new Bill Murray, everything she said cracked me up.
  • “Salty parabolas” is the funniest phrase I’ve heard in months.
  • It was weird to see Kristen Wiig play the “straight man” to McKinnon and Leslie Jones’ comedic roles. I never thought I’d see her in a comedy where she takes a sort of backseat to others in the cast.
  • Having Chris Hemsworth play a dumb stereotype was hilarious. Every dude watching this movie should realize most women’s roles in comedies (and all films, for the most part) are roles of this nature. We’re barely moving away from it being the norm now.
  • It came out on Monday night in Ireland, where I saw it. I understand opening a film on a Monday gives you the largest possible first-weekend gross receipts, but is there a culture of going out to see opening night films on a Monday in Europe? It felt weird being in a crowded theater on a Monday for me, I’m used to the big Friday nights in the US.
  • Stay for the very end, all the way because there are loads of little bits that play after the credits roll.
  • If you stay through the credits I hope you’ll agree with me that based on his amazing dancing, it will be a travesty if Chris Hemsworth doesn’t co-star with Channing Tatum in a future Magic Mike movie. I would be so there for a Chris Hemsworth-Channing Tatum Magic Mike III. Hollywood, make this a reality. Please.
  • People say the new Star Wars was doing a lot of fan service, but Ghostbusters has loads more fan service. Every cameo by actors from the first Ghostbusters had the theater erupting in applause. The crowd went NUTS when they recognized someone.
  • People in my Dublin theater applauded when they caught their first ghost. I thought that was cute the audience was that into it.
  • Did they set up a sequel with hopefully an appearance by Rick Moranis? It seemed like they did.
  • The whole end of the film felt like Paul Feig and the four ghostbusters were running a victory lap as they mocked small-minded stupid threads on places like reddit that decried the movie so hard since it was announced. I loved every second of it. In fact, I was kind of ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ about the film until the ending and post-credits sequences, which lifted me up and made me like it quite a bit more.
  • Go see it, you’ll have a good time.
