Chromium's blog informs that Google Chrome will drop support for H.264 in the coming months and will only support WebM (VP8) and Theora codecs.

There is no good reason for Chrome to drop a video standard that YouTube helped push.
A Whole Lotta Nothing 
There are plenty of reasons to try and push web video that isn’t H.264 dependent. Mozilla has been pushing Theora (and then WebM when it was unveiled) the whole time, and the reasoning is based on what is a pretty clear legal groundwork. I know it’s hard to see Google doing something for anything but a cynical reason, and I am not claiming that this decision is altruistic in nature. However, what ulterior motives would you ascribe Mozilla?
