Why everyone loves coming up with ideas in the shower

A shower is great for coming up with ideas because it's essentially a sensory deprivation chamber in your very own home. Lots of white noise from the water, coupled with all white walls and obscured glass means there are no auditory or visual outside distractions to hinder thinking.

  • Fully agree. Jogging (without music) also does the trick for me.

  • i call it me time. can’t hear anything but my own thoughts, it’s amazing.

  • I had something witty and halfway smart to say before i signed in. Now i want a sensory deprivation chamber. Or at least a shower 😛 have a nice day.

  • my shower was built in the 1970s, it has blue and pink tiles. I usually spend as little time in there as possible.

  • Hard to keep a whiteboard in there, though…

  • Just had a shower and came up with what to have for dinner while in there! lol

  • Awesome! Now if i can shower longer without wasting water… living in California water is precious!

  • Though they lack the timer of pruning skin, I’ve found that a pair of cheap 30 NRR earplugs (available at any drugstore) can work deprivative wonders.

  • I had never thought about it that way, but I noticed I started being much more productive when I started wearing my heavy padded headphones and listening to techno. Shower thinking ftw though.

  • The shower is #1. Next is when I’m driving. Neither one is conducive to writing those ideas down!

  • seconding wowlibrarian – shower, then driving.

  • Driving without the radio on… talking to yourself.
You might look nuts but it really helps to clarify things.

  • What about sitting on the toilet? I don’t know if it’s just that I’m relaxed or what, but the shower and the toilet are big-time idea centers. Or maybe my bathroom is magic.

  • Interesting. I *never* come up with ideas in the shower. But my shower has a window that opens and looks out at downtown San Francisco

  • Aw, c’mon, you should have come up with an idea to solve the homeless problem with that view by now.

  • Showers are a great place to brainstorm. I have to get some waterproof device to dictate them BEFORE I step out. Another good spot for me is mowing the lawn…

  • No doubt about it…the shower is the best place for inspiration and great ideas. After losing a number of break-through ideas due to memory loss between the shower and my desk, we invented a waterproof notepad to write on in the shower. Check it out at http://www.myaquanotes.com

  • You’re surrounded by whiteboard in there… unless you have a curtain I suppose. Get some kids bathtub paint or crayons and take notes to your heart’s content.

  • I’ve decided to only attend meetings via FaceTime in the shower. I’ve put on a special water-resistant bumper and enabled my clothes-on in home office filter. My productivity has increased 84% and my coworkers now think I’m a genius.

  • not if your shower don’t have running water LOL! I get to think the best when i’m relaxed and walking – with music on.

  • “Aw, c’mon, you should have come up with an idea to solve the homeless problem with that view by now.”

  • Try a diver’s slate. They’re inexpensive and reusable.
